Shero Inks Extension

The Pens signed GM Ray Shero to a five-year contract extension, keeping him in Pittsburgh through the 2015-16 season. Great decision. Shero has been mostly brilliant since coming to town in 2006. His moves helped pave the way to a Stanley Cup championship. Here’s just a few off the top of my head:

  • Traded for Bill Guerin
  • Signed Matt Cooke
  • Traded Ryan Whitney for Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi
  • Drafted Jordan Staal
  • The Marian Hossa deal (remember Pascal Dupuis was part of it)
  • Traded for Hal Gill
  • Nabbing Craig Adams off waivers

There are several more decisions I could add to that list, such as promoting Dan Bylsma from WBS to Pittsburgh. Also keep in mind that Shero has thus far managed to keep the team’s core intact in this ever-challenging salary-cap climate.  Sure, he’s had a few hiccups (Alexei Ponikarovsky?), but what GM doesn’t. I think you’d be very hard-pressed to find a fan who would voice displeasure and/or object to this extension. If that’s not a measure of how good a job Shero’s done, I don’t know what is.
