Well, I’ve had time to fully digest the news of the Pens being featured on an HBO miniseries. After the excitement wore off, I began to think, “Could this actually be a bad thing? Could the show be a distraction to the team?”
Just think about it for a moment. There will be a lot more cameras around, and there will be a lot more media-related responsibilities involved for players/coaches. Add in the pressure of knowing that your every move and anything you say could end up on national TV, and you get a situation that some might find uncomfortable and/or stressful.
This is obviously a first for the organization – and for the NHL – so it’s impossible to answer these questions right now. We’ll just have to see how it plays out and hope the Pens handle themselves appropriately. Thankfully, the show is only four episodes.
I’m also slightly concerned about the editing process. Remember, this is “reality” television, where producers can make people look pretty much any way they want them to look. I can’t imagine a world where Sid’s the heel and Ovie’s the hero, but it is a possibility. Nor can I fathom how Pittsburgh might come out of this looking worse than Washington, but again…
