The Civic Arena is closer than ever to demolition. The city planning commission voted to reject a historic designation for the old home of the Penguins. Now the only thing standing between the Igloo and a wrecking ball is the Pittsburgh City Council, who previously refused to designate it as a historic structure.
I loved the Igloo, and I don’t question its historical significance. But to have two arenas across the street from each other is just dumb. Tear it down and redevelop the site. Will I shed a tear when demo day comes? Sure. Is it the right decision? Yes. I look forward to see what will rise from the Igloo’s ashes. It can only be an improvement over an abandoned, useless arena.
