Penguins go into tonight’s match up against the Hurricane with momentum and proof that they can now win playing in a high scoring fashion and low and slow. Pens won against the Caps the other night by grinding it out. Going into tonight, they will have an opportunity to win a game the other way, High Scoring. At least on their side of the scoreboard.
The Canes come into tonight struggling, winning only once out of the last 10 games since they last played the Pens, when then won 5-3. Jeff Skinner is the team leader right now in points and goals, and with Eric Staal struggling as he has so far this season, their has to be a feeling of being all alone right now for Skinner.
There is absolutely no hiding the fact that this Carolina team is not playing well in just about every facet of the game. Goal scoring is down, and their defense is not helping at all. In games where the defense stands tall, they are getting no offensive production. In games where the offense is scoring, the defense is struggling. I guess that is why they are 8-15 and 4.
The Pens on the other hand roll into town tonight with a 15-7 and 4 record, almost the exact opposite record as the Canes. And you can clearly see why. Sidney Crosby comes into tonight having scored 11 points in his first 6 games back from his concussions. Actually, in 2 of those games, he did not score at all so you could say that his 11 points came in 4 games which is ridiculous. Also, Neal has continued his hot play with 25 points thus far, 14 of those being from goals and 11 assists to go along with those goals. Fleury is also playing at an elite level, which is what Penguins fans are growing accustomed to seeing game in and game out. The other Staal playing in this game,Jordan is having his best season yet, with 12 goals and 6 assists. He is the best third line center in Hockey. On most teams, Staal would be at worst a 2nd line center but on this team, with Malkin and Crosby, he is a third liner. Though, he is clearly their best penalty killer and most physical center on the ice for them. The one Penguin that is struggling right now is defenseman Paul Martin. He has looked lost at times this season, and this is what many in the league thought was one of the better defenseman out there.
We will see if this Penguin offense can respond and score some goals against a team that is coming into tonight reeling. And the Hurricane, are looking for a turn around and nothing would serve as a bigger spark then to beat the Best Team in Hockey. Michalek and Letang are still out, and to this point, there isn’t any new information on their concussion situations right now.
