Flyer's Start Fast And Hold On To Win

The Flyer’s came out shooting tonight, and the Penguin’s were on the ropes early as the Flyer’s were able to score and hang on for the win.

Briere scored in the first period for a 1-0 flyer’s lead.    Simmonds followed that up in the second period with a goal to make it 2-0 and at that point, the Flyer’s were still out shooting the Pen’s.    The Penguin’s had many power play opportunities, in the second period but could not make anything happen, and then later in that second period, Hartnell made it 3-0.   The Pen’s were able to finally get one passed Bryzgalov with a James Neal goal late in the second period which slowed the Flyer’s momentum, and jump started the Pen’s.     Later in at Third period, Malkin was able to draw the Pen’s within 1 but that was all the closer they could get.

Bryzgalov only faced 27 shots tonight and saved 25 of them.      Fleury faced only 1 more shot than Bryzgalov, but was not able to help out his defense tonight.    The defense consistently put Fleury in bad positions and he was not able to come up big when they needed it.

In the second period, Zac Rinoldo of the Flyer’s was given an interference call against the Pen’s Bortuzzo that may end up costing Rinoldo a game or 2.  Bortuzzo never returned tonight to the ice and was reported with an upper body injury that sure resembled a head injury.     The hit was high, and looked like he made no effort to pull off of it. Which in my mind proves intent.     Especially knowing that Rinoldo leads the league in penalty minutes.

Jagr had a good game, drawing penalties, and playing physical.      He finished with 5 shots on goal, none of which got by, but he kept shooting which is what you want your star to do.      Max Talbot played well in the first period, but we did not see much of him after that point.    He only played about 11 minutes tonight.     Not sure if it was an injury or what.     Nothing has been reported yet.

Unfortunately, this was the second game in a row that they started slow and could not recover.      The defense let them down in the first period and a half of the last 2 games.    They have been out shot in the first period of the last 2 games 26-14.      The losses they have sustained in the defense in the past week or so, are really starting to affect this teams play.       And right now, their is no time table for letang and Michalek, and now with Bortuzzo out with what could be another concussion, they are going to need to dip into their Wilkes Barre team for some reinforcements.
