Pen’s Hold Detroit, But For Only Two Periods

(AP Photo)The Penguins got good news right before the game, with the news of Staal and Malkin being able to play, but in the end it was not enough.      The depleted Pen’s held tough, playing close to the vest, with stifling defense only giving up 13 shots through the first two periods.      Too bad Hockey has that Pesky 3rd period.

Malkin scored the game’s first goal for the Pen’s.       They held that one goal lead through almost 2 periods when Pavel Datsyuk scored with about 4 minutes left in the period.      Giving up only 13 shots on goal for the first 2 periods was what kept this team in the game.     During the 3rd period is when Detroit turned it on, and took control.

The Red Wings scored 3 times in the third period on 12 shots and put this game away.    Cleary scored twice including an empty netter with 5 seconds left in the game.     Franzen bagged the go ahead goal 5 minutes into the third period.     Jimmy Howard played very well tonight, holding the Pen’s down, including making a game changing stop early in the second period from Evgeni Malkin which could have changed the momentum and outcome of the game.

Fleury on the other hand faced only 24 shots, but gave up 3 goals while his defense in front of him left him in bad situations throughout the third period.     The Goal that put the game out of reach was scored by Cleary on a 3 on 1 with Staal trailing.     He was at the end of the shift and ran out of gas which is why the 3-1 occurred and made it easy for Cleary to Finish.

The Penguin’s next game will be at Ottawa Friday Night.    It will be the first of the back to back games this weekend.       They play against Buffalo at home Saturday Night.       That give’s this team a few days to get healthy.
