You make the call, do the Pittsburgh Penguins or the NHL have a beef with Alexandre Ovechkin? Is this not the kind of hit they are trying to eliminate from the league? I think so.
Not sure what will come of it, but I must admit, the fact that Zybanek Michalek was not injured should not play a role in weather or not a guy gets a suspension. Do we need to see blood or have someone leave the ice in order for it to be called? And why was it not at least called boarding on the ice? He left his feet. Ovechkin makes hits like this all the time but he gets a free pass for the most part because he is one of the NHL’s Premier Players. It has to end.
There already has been a stretch in the season in which over a 30 day period, there were 28 concussions reported. That is a staggering number and having Sid still on the IR list and Asham just got a concussion with no return date even remotely being discussed shows full well that the league is not doing enough to protect the players.
I have been screaming this from the mountaintops, please expand the ice size to give these players room to skate. This nightly ritual of hitting above the neck has to end. Discipline Czar Brendan Shanahan has been doling out punishment but it is not deterring anyone from the illegal hitting. A 2 game suspension, or just the other day, a $2500 fine for a Dangerous Slew foot from Subban, these are just not substantial enough to change the hearts and minds of the NHL. They need to make it real.
For Example, Your first bad hit costs you 10 games. Your second costs you 35 and the 3rd bad hit costs you your season. I know that sounds severe, but since we know they will not expand the ice size because it will cost the owners too much money , at least give real consequesnces to players that want to be foolish.
