The Pittsburgh Penguins were down early in this game and were not able to summon any of the magic they have been working with lately. The Devils were able to get their 30th victory of the season with a 5-2 victory today.
Ilya Kovalchuk started off the scoring today with a goal at the 2:21 mark of the first period. Anton Volchenkov scored to make the game 2-0 at the 10 minuted mark. There was no more scoring in the period as the Penguins were out chanced and out played in the first period. Marc Andre Fleury had his worst game in weeks today, as he stopped 9 of the 12 shots he faced. He was then replaced early in the second period by Brent Johnson.
Zubris started the second period off with a goal at the 2:23 point of the 2nd period. Matt Niskanen was able to get the Pens on the board about a minute later, but that would be all the closer it would get the rest of the game. Zach Parise scored midway through the period for the Devils and that made the game 4-1. By this point, the momentum was with the Devils and Marty Brodeur was stopping everything he faced.
Evgeni Malkin was able to chip one in with about 4 minutes left in the third period, but they were not able to score again. The Devils got an empty net goal by Clarkson to make the game 5-2 and that ended up being the final score. The Penguins out shot the New Jersey Devils today, but were not able to get enough shots passed the Future Hall Of Famer, Martin Brodeur.
The Penguins have a couple of days off before they play their next game. The Pens play the 4th of their 4 game road trip against Montreal on Tuesday.
