The Penguins take on the Class of the Conference in the New York Rangers tonight without there best defenseman, Brooks Orpik. They will also be without Brent Johnson tonight as Fleury’s backup. Coach Bylsma stated today that Johnson would be out sick.
That means the Pens had to dip into Wilkes Barre for tonight. Eric Tangradi was recalled and may be on the ice. Ben Lovejoy will be on the ice for Orpik and Theissen will be the back up tonight behind Fleury. The media was not really given any hints on weather or not the Theissen move would be more permanent or not. With Johnson struggling the way he is, and the fact that Theissen was probably the best Goalie in all of Minor League Hockey last year might just be the remedy for this Penguins team going forward.
In other Penguins news, Crosby skated today before practice for about 45 minutes but his status has not changes. Also, Ray Shero has been quoted to say, and I am paraphrasing, that he likes the team the way it is currently constructed and don’t expect any major moves before the trade deadline.
As for the Ranger’s, they come into tonight 7-2 and 1 over it’s last 10 games. They have clearly been the most consistent team in the eastern conference. Led by the goal tending of Lundqvist and that Rangers Tenacious defense, they are a team that does not need to score 6 goals a night. Their defenseman rarely cheat down the ice, nor do they get caught out of position. Unlike what Fleury has faced recently in the repeated breakaways. Fleury is not only being asked to save the team night in and night out but he is on pace to play around 65 games for the season. No goalie that has played 65 or more games in a season has ever won a Stanley Cup.
