The Flyers did upend the Penguins today to cut within one of the fourth overall spot in the Eastern Conference but that was not the big story. With a almost a minute left Joe Vitale laid a punishing hit which led to a big brawl on ice and an argument between coaches on the bench. We saw everything from Craig Adams, Aaron Asham and even Sidney Crosby tangled it up with some of the Flyers. I don’t think it was expected to see Tony Grannado and Peter Laviolette exchange some words which got the crowd’s attention very quickly. After the game concluded Laviolette called Dan Byslma gutless for sending his 4th line of enforcers onto the ice.
Hockey is always been a physical sport and this rivalry has been nothing short of that. I have a ton of respect for this rivalry but when you have someone like Peter Laviolette come out after the game and call Dan Bylsma gutless, I think we have a problem. The Joe Vitale hit that took place, which was legal, could have happened at any point in any game this season. I honestly can sit here and believe that Bylsma put this 4th line out there to protect his star players and keep them healthy. I believe Peter Laviolette has hit the bottom of the barrel in terms of class.
After the events of today and whatever transpires on Saturday night I am betting I am one of many Penguin and Flyer fans that want this same matchup come next week when the playoffs start.
