The Pittsburgh Penguins chances to win a Stanley Cup ended today. The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Penguins 5-1 to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Flyers came out strong immediately with Claude Giroux lighting the lamp merely 32 seconds into the game after checking Sidney Crosby to the ground. After that goal the Flyers never looked back as Scott Hartnell scored late in the 1st period. Erik Gustaffson added another tally in the second to make it 3-0.
The Penguins finally got on the board with their only goal from the afternoon coming from Evgeni Malkin. The coaches and players excited about a possible momentum swing saw it taken away by a goal from Danny Briere which made it 4-1. After Briere’s goal the Penguins could not do anything offensively. The Flyers blocked 41 shots and kept the Penguins out of the Flyers zone all afternoon. Brayden Schenn poked in an empty netter to seal the game for the Flyers.
The entire Pittsburgh Penguin team had trouble jump starting themselves today especially Sidney Crosby, who looked off all afternoon. Marc Andre Fluery had a rough afternoon behind the cage and the penalty kill failed to show up once again.
This was a very disappointing ending for the Penguins in my opinion. A highly favored team to win the Stanley cup makes another early exit. With the seasons that Evgeni Malkin, Marc Andre Fluery, and the rest of the team had it makes this an even harder pill to swallow. Since winning the cup the Penguins have not advanced past the 2nd round.
Now the even harder part comes, waiting till October for Pittsburgh Penguin hockey. I am going to say it now don’t be surprised if some of the bigger and well known names on this team are not Penguins next season. The offseason is going to be detrimental to the future of this team and if they are going to be Stanley Cup champs again.
