The Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero gave his coach the vote of confidence he was looking for to move forward with his team. The 2 of them spoke yesterday afternoon late, and after he congratulated the Flyers for the series win, which I could bet would have been the most difficult thing he has done in a while, he made this comment about his coach.
I have a lot of belief in our head coach Dan Bylsma. He’s the right coach for this hockey team. We are fortunate to have him.
It was nice to hear, though I can bet that in the background he was spoken to a bit more stern than the way this came out. This is his 3rd year of failing to advance to the 3rd round and in some cases, not even get past the 1st round. If he happens to go through an elongated rough patch this upcoming year, I think it is safe to say he will be at least on the hot seat if not let go.
In other news, Evgeni Malkin will play in the World Championships as usual for his Home country. As for Sidney Crosby, he is going to sit out this year to give himself what he called a normal offseason and try to rehab and get in some typical training for this upcoming season. He is healthy as far as Ray Shero is concerned at this point. They have no knowledge of anything else, so he will go into this offseason healthy and preparing as usual which will be unlike anything he has done for a couple of years.
Shero was also asked about Paul Martin and Zybanek Michalek and their status regarding the poor play and their contract situations. They both have a couple more years left and he stated he is confident in both. Here is another quote from Shero on his 2 defenseman.
both players are really good players in this league. They’ve proven that over the course of their careers.
Also, here is another quote from his closing press conference regarding resigning Crosby and Staal.
I’m not sure. I need to sit down with them over the next month or so, have some conversation with them and see where we are. Our goal is to re-sign both of them. I think they’re both special hockey players. They’re great assets; they’re at a young age; they’re in their prime. Until we can sit down in the next month or so, and especially make some personal decisions, we’re going into summer time where at this point we don’t have a CBA. I’m running business as usual and my business would be to try and re-sign some players here.
