Evgeni Malkin is putting the anguish of Stanley Cup elimination behind him and has joined up with the Russia squad for the IIHF World Championships in Finland and Sweden.

Team Russia have been drawn in a group with Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Norway and, joint hosts, Sweden.  Malkin is likely to come up against fellow NHL players such as Milan Michalek, Gabriel Landeskog and Henrik Zetterberg.  Joining Malkin is Red Wings powerhouse Pavel Datsyuk along with the Avalanche goalie, Semyon Varlamov.  All of Russia’s group games will be played in Stockholm, Sweden, and the whole tournament will be available to watch live and free on YouTube.  Television coverage in the US will be by NBC.

The IIHF Championships consist of 16 teams split into 2 groups of 8. The second group is made up of Belarus, Canada, Finland, France, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Slovakia and USA.  This group plays all of its matches in Helsinki, Finland.  The top 4 in each group progress to the knockout phase and the final takes place on May 20 in Helsinki.  The mouth watering clash between Team Canada and Team USA takes place on Saturday, May 5, at 7pm local time. The tournament will also decide the seedings for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

I want to win the world championships

Malkin has yet to win a gold medal for his native Russia, having been a runner up in the competition in 2010. The last time he featured in the championships, Malkin scored 5 goals and 2 assists in 5 games.  He played in the final, versus the Czech Republic, but suffered a 2-1 defeat despite a Pavel Datsyuk 5-on-3 goal late in the game to give Russia a chance to take it to overtime.  It seems that Evgeni Malkin doesn’t intend for that to happen this time.
