The US was able to hold on against a feisty Belarus squad on Thursday by a score of 5-3.     It was a total team effort as their were 5 different goal scorers for the Americans.

The Scoring got off to a fast start when Justin Abdelkader scored at the 1:39  mark of the 1st period to give the Americans a 1-0 lead.     Cam Atkinson scored about 6 minutes later to give the US a 2-0 lead.    Jimmy Howard played well in goal all night as he only gave up 3 goals in 26 shots.       Belarus was able to get a puck behind Howard late in the first period to draw within 1.

Belarus tied the game up with a goal at the 2:50 second mark of the second period.     That would be all the closer they would get.   The bulk of the period was played fairly close to the vest, though Belarus did out shoot the Americans by 10 shots for the game.    later in the second period the US was able to grab the lead by a  goal by Nate Thompson at the 18:21 mark of the period.

Midway through the 3rd period, Bobby Ryan would push the US lead to 4-2.    Several minutes later Paul Stastny added a 5th goal to stretch the lead to 5-2.    Belarus would score with about 10 seconds left in the period but it ended up being too little and way too late.

The US will play Kazakhstan on Friday followed by Finland on Sunday.    If you would like to follow me on Twitter you can @sportsmonger and on Sports Monger Radio.
