The Pittsburgh Penguins drafted Olli Maatta 22nd overall. Olli is from Finland, 6′ 2″, 200lb defenseman that likes to play the body, but does not need to rely on the big hit. He does not shy away from them either.
Maatta tallied 32 points for the London Knights of the OHL this past season, with 5 goals. He is a stay at home style of defenseman that relies on his body position to play the player and puck. He has good reach, not the tallest player of the draft, but he is over 6 feet tall and a bigger frame to go with that. Body position as mentioned is important to him, but he can not achieve that without leverage. Leverage is something that he has and can utilize because of his size and strength. (source)
This was a “GREAT DRAFT” for the Penguins. Essentially getting 5 players for one Jordan Staal. What a night for the Penguins, what a night for the City of Pittsburgh. “It’s a Great Day For Hockey”!
