The Penguins did not waste any time dealing Jordan Staal and in return the Penguins drafted Derrick Pouliot with the number 8 overall pick.
I am extremely satisfied with the move. With a lack luster performance by the Penguins defenseman in the playoffs, it was safe to say that the Pens were going to get some help defending their own end. With time I can see Pouliot quarterbacking the Penguins power play unit. He has exceptional speed and great skating ability. That combination of skills will serve the Penguins for many years. Another big flaw the Penguins had this past year defensively was inaccurate passes around the blue line. Pouliot brings accurate passing and puck handling skills.
The only concern right now for Pouliot could be his size strength. He is not a very bulky defenseman. With work in the weight room he will be able to bring the necessary checks needed to prevent scoring from opposing teams. Pouliot also doesn’t have a very strong slap shot. Again that will build up with time spent in the weight room.
I feel that this was an amazing. With other potential defenseman like Simon Despres on the rise, with time we could possibly see the best D pairing in the league when Derrick Pouliot gets his chance.
