The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to come to a contractual agreement with one of their prize possessions for what could be the rest of his career. Sidney Crosby has agreed on terms to a 12 year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, which will lock him up into his mid to late 30’s. Let’s hope we get to see him play for all of those years.
The 12 year contract is for a reported $104.4 million and calls for an annual salary cap hit of $8.7 million which is near what his salary is now. For Sid, he understands that he is in a good place and does not want to leave. He also understands that he has to take as much money as possible, but also not put the Penguins in a position they can not surround him with talent to compete.
In a joint statement sent out from the Penguins, here is what Mario and his investment group had to say.(Quote from Penguins.com)
“This is a great day for hockey and tremendous news for the Pittsburgh Penguins and our fans,” co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle said in a joint statement. “We are grateful for all that Sidney Crosby has done for our franchise since coming to Pittsburgh in 2005, both on and off the ice, and we look forward to having him in a Penguins uniform for the rest of his career. He is an excellent player and an even better person, and he is a great ambassador for the Penguins and for Pittsburgh.”
This is just one piece of the puzzle moving forward though. They now have to figure out a way to do the same for Evgeni Malkin. We will see how this next chapter will play out.
