The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ray Shero had a busy first day of free agency as they were able to add a couple of players to the mix, not to mention, make official a couple of deals that were already announced.
It was announced earlier this week, that Both Sidney Crosby and Matt Niskanen both came to terms, so today was a formality for both as they signed on the dotted line. As for the rest of the moves today, those were more of a surprise.
First off, the Pens signed Winnipeg Jet Tanner Glass who is coming off of career bests in hits, points, and short handed minutes played. Glass is a stand out defensive forward that likes to hit, and that is something this team lacks in a big way. Not to mention the fact the Aaron Asham was not retained today so they did lose a bit of the toughness they did have. Although, this team really did not show any toughness down the stretch, so adding Glass is a nice pick up. They also were able to add him for 2 seasons at $1.1 million a year.
Their second pick up today was local kid, Dylan Reese from the Islanders. It is a 2 way contract, worth $600,000 as long as he is on the NHL Roster. Reese has played 74 games with the Islanders the last couple of seasons as a defenseman, scoring a total of 17 points, 3 of which were goals. Reese is an Upper St. Clair Native and happy to be home.
The Pens also just announced they signed another to a 2 way contract, this time it was Warren Peters. Peters is a forward that has played in the Wild Organization for the past couple of years. The NHL contract is worth $600,000.
