Pittsburgh Penguins’ defenseman Rob Scuderi has reportedly broken his ankle, according to Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Rossi tweeted that Scuderi will be out indefinitely.
This is a big blow to a team that already has forwards’ Beau Bennett and James Neal shelved with troublesome injuries. And while Scuderi’s presence in the lineup will be sorely missed, it’s also a blessing that the team decided to keep prospect Olli Maatta on the roster.
Pittsburgh’s depth at the defensive position will undoubtedly come into play now, and that means defenseman Robert Bortuzzo could be seeing more ice-time. It also means that defenseman-turned-forward Deryk Engelland will assume his natural position on the blueline.
We’ll see how head coach Dan Bylsma lines everybody up when the team takes on the Boston Bruins, Wednesday, at 8 p.m.
