Report: Pens Bring Despres, Gibbons Back Up

Amidst a few injuries, the Pittsburgh Penguins have brought defenseman Simon Despres and forward Brian Gibbons back up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton – according to the Pens’ website.

Despres will provide depth now that both Kris Letang and Paul Martin are out with separate ailments, and Gibbons is arguably back due to the same issues on the forward front.

For Despres, this promotion is an opportunity to stick with the club going down the stretch. In WBS, Despres is tied for the team lead in plus/minus with an excellent plus-18 rating.

In 18 contests for Pittsburgh this season, Despres has recorded four assists.

Gibbons, who was sent down to WBS over the Olympic break, is back up, to my knowledge, because forward Beau Bennett might not yet be entirely ready to go. Either that, or it’s due to the fact Gibbons has performed steadily for Pittsburgh on their top-line.

Nonetheless, Gibbons should continue to provide a solid all-around game.

In 19 games, Gibbons has registered nine points (4G, 5A) and skated to a plus-3 rating for Pittsburgh.
