Report: Pens' Prospect Derrick Pouliot is CHL D-Man of Year

Pittsburgh Penguins’ top prospect Derrick Pouliot has reportedly been named the Canadian Hockey League’s (CHL) Defenseman of the Year – according to the Pens’ Twitter handle and website.

Pouliot, who underwent should surgery this week, had a phenomenal season in the Western Hockey League (WHL) playing for the Portland Winterhawks.

In 58 regular-season games for the ‘Hawks, Pouliot finished ranked third in the WHL for defensemen with 70 points (17G, 53A). Through 21 playoff contests, Pouliot led all WHL defensemen with 32 points (5G, 27A). These fabulous scoring totals justify why he ended up taking home the WHL’s Defenseman of the Year award as well.

Pouliot was expected to seriously compete for a roster spot in September, but now, considering he endured shoulder surgery, he’s more likely to begin in the American Hockey League (AHL) playing for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. However, we shouldn’t rule out a speedy recovery and a slot in the Pens’ six defensemen rotation.

Nonetheless, a tremendous season in the WHL for young Pouliot.
