Marc-Andre Fleury became the 31st goalie in NHL history to reach 300 career wins. Fleury has played his entire career with the Pittsburgh Penguins and actually just signed a four year/$23 million dollar extension – per CapGeek.com.  In addition to joining the elite class of goaltenders who have reached this milestone, Marc-Andre Fleury was the third youngest to do so at age 29.

This milestone is one of the biggest Fleury has achieved in his brief career and bodes well for his future chances of making the professional hockey hall of fame. Twelve of the nineteen goalies who have reached 300 wins and are eligible for the hall have made it in. Recently unemployed Martin Brodeur will be joining those twelve once he becomes eligible for the hall of fame.

There is no question that throughout Marc-Andre Fleury’s career he has been one of the most polarizing goalies in the entire league. One game Fleury could look like the greatest netminder in NHL history and the next he looks like he should not even play in the minors.

His inconsistent mental and physical play is a big reason why Fleury’s 300 career wins might deserve an asterisk next to it. Marc-Andre Fleury’s biggest doubters will try and showcase that the quality of the team around a goalie determines how many wins they will have during their career. If you look at former Penguin netminder Tomas Vokoun, he only achieved 300 wins two seasons ago at age 37.

There is no question that Fleury has had one of the most talented teams around him. Stars like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Kris Letang and James Neal all having spent large portions (if not all) of their career with the Penguins and contribute to Fleury’s win total.

Whether or not Marc-Andre Fleury will be respected as an elite goaltender after this milestone is not a large issue right now. Fleury is focused on trying to bring the Stanley Cup back to Pittsburgh. Regardless of Fleury’s reputation, he has been an invaluable asset to the Penguins and is a big reason why hockey has became one of Pittsburgh’s favorite pastimes.
