Earlier this offseason the Buffalo Sabres made the surprising decision to buyout the remainder of Christian Ehrhoff’s 10-year, $40 million dollar deal – per CapGeek.com. As soon as he was bought out, he instantly became one of the most coveted free agents.

Ehrhoff’s play had slipped in recent years with the Sabres, but that was due to the team around him, and not declining skills. He is widely regarded as a premier puck-moving defenseman, yet his point totals have decresed while playing with Buffalo. The Penguins are going to need Ehrhoff to play like he did with Vancouver, and be a steady defensive force. Ehrhoff will be especially important with the recent history of Penguins’ defensemen getting injured throughout the season.

But what is still a mystery to everyone, probably even Ehrhoff, is who he will play with? Many assume he will be paired with Olli Maatta, but he probably won’t be healthy to start the season. It really is anyone’s guess who he will skate alongside. Regardless of who he plays with, look for Ehrhoff to become a leader and assist the development of the Penguins’ young defensemen.
