As news surrounding free agency keeps surfacing, the Pittsburgh Penguins may be in a bit more trouble than they first expected.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a number of free agents this season, immediately after winning their second straight Stanley Cup. With contracts catching up to them, they’ve been trying to make it a priority to get their unrestricted free agent’s signed. Not all of them are cooperating though.

As Pierre Lebrun reported on Thursday, both the Boston Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings are eying Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Trevor Daley. Daley is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

Daley had 19 points in 56 games this season for the Penguins. At 33 years old, he still has lots of time to perform exceptionally, as he did here in Pittsburgh.

Losing Daley

So what does this mean for the Penguins? Well this is a tough offseason for us. After winning two straight Stanley Cups, the contracts were sure to catch up with us. Our great team was built upon great contracts (like Justin Schultz’s cheap one year deal). However, everything good comes to an end.

Just taking a look at other free agent’s that the Penguins have to worry about, we also have to re-sign Justin Schultz, Nick Bonino, Matt Cullen, and Conor Sheary. It may be difficult to re-sign all of them, and realistically we will lose some heading forward.

Trevor Daley is looking like the expendable one out of the bunch. We will have to end up replacing him if Boston or Detroit’s offers are much more attractive. We can look to free agency, which may be a likely option, or we may even have to trade for a d-man.
