The Pittsburgh Penguins have already won the Stanley Cup back-to-back the last two years but they might not be done yet. Sidney Crosby, on his 30th birthday, teased a possible ‘three-peat.’

Sidney Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is officially a 30-year-old with three Stanley Cups and a plethora of awards under his belt. This year the Penguins won the second of their back-to-back Stanley Cups- but is a third one on the way?

Crosby said, via NHL.com, that:

"“I have a pretty good understanding of how hard two is. I can’t imagine what three must be like. I’d love to find out. It’s going to be tough, but we’re going to training camp with that in mind. It’ll be a big challenge, but why not.”"

Crosby acknowledges that chasing a third consecutive Stanley Cup will be difficult, but he isn’t denying the challenge. The Penguins have proved, time and time again, that they are a team capable of anything and this might be no different.

It Isn’t Impossible

The Penguins have already notched three Stanley Cups in the ‘Sidney Crosby Era’ and their performance thus far wouldn’t make another consecutive Cup feel ‘impossible.’

The Penguins were fourth in the league for wins last season and led the league with 278 goals for.  Pittsburgh also led with a little over three goals per game and ranked fourth for their powerplay. Ultimately, the Penguins mostly topped the league in terms of play and offense.

Ten players on the Penguins exceeded 30 points this season, proving that the team is incredibly offensively gifted. Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel all hit a minimum of 70 points last season and proved, again, they’re elite. In all, the Pens have proven repeatedly that they are elite.

Still, going into the 2017-18 season, the Penguins are one of the strongest teams in the league. One might even argue that the Pens are the strongest team in the league, and no one would argue against the now consecutive Stanley Cups.

The Penguins are very capable of taking home another consecutive Stanley Cup if they are up for the challenge. Regardless, the rest of the NHL won’t be willing to let the team win again and will do their best to defeat them.

The Penguins are up for the challenge. Pittsburgh is equipped with everything they need to win again. One thing is certain, the Penguins are going to do everything they can to have an even better season than they’re last.

Plus- third time’s a charm, right?
