The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the market for an upgrade on defence.

The Pittsburgh Penguins need to upgrade their blue line. After losing both Ron Hainsey and Ian Cole, and with Matt Hunwick proving to be unstable, the Penguins should be searching for two-way defenceman to strengthen our team.

One rumour that has popped up recently is the Carolina Hurricanes openness to trade away co-captain and two-way defenceman Justin Faulk. According to CBS Sports, the Hurricanes have been looking for a goaltending successor to Cam Ward. After putting their faith in Scott Darling and having that experiment fail, they are out once again to find a viable starting goaltender.

The Penguins have been needing an upgrade on the blue-line. Faulk is a viable first o second pairing defenceman and can bring a lot to the table. The Penguins should be looking to acquire him.

Why Would We Need Him?

The Penguins need defencemen. After Ian Cole was traded away at the deadline, the Penguins blue line was never the same. We saw our defence have trouble in the playoffs and if we want to truly contend once again, an upgrade is well needed.

Justin Faulk is a leader. He can bring a lot to the table. He’s the Hurricanes best defenceman and he can play a whole lot of minutes. If he slotted into our lineup, be it on the first or second pair, our lineup would instantly look a whole lot stronger.

What Will It Cost Us?

It’s going to cost us a lot to get Faulk, that’s for sure. But the good news is that the Hurricanes are a rebuilding team. They want things like prospects and picks. We are a contending team. We’re looking to win now, and we’re ready to trade some prospects and picks if need be. This seems like a match made in heaven.

If the Penguins are serious about this improvement, we should start inquiring soon. The Hurricanes currently hold the #2 pick in this years draft and will probably want to build on these picks. If we can work out a deal, we should probably take it.
