For the Man of the Week Monday, we chose to give it to a defenseman in Kris Letang, and after we go over his statline, you will see why.

The Penguins finished the last week with a 2-1 record, and saw their win streak come to an end. What did not come to the end though, was the impressive play of Kris Letang, and he earned himself the Man of the Week for last week. The Pens have been dynamic defensively, with the exception of last night, and while everyone looks at this to be due to the great goalie play, it has also been due to the contributions of Letang.

Letang has been unbelievable in transition play, and he is also logging some big time minutes, as last week he averaged 27 minutes per game on the ice. He has been a great leader for these defensemen, and has also been producing big time numbers on offense as well. Letang finished the week with two goals and two assists, and was one of four players to get four points total last week.

There have been many reasons that have led to the Penguins picking up the pace, but the biggest one is arguably how this defense has played, along with the stellar goaltending recently from Matt Murray. This defense will become especially vital as the team prepares for the upcoming west coast trip, which will begin after tomorrow’s home game.

If Kris Letang continues what has arguably been the best season of his career, it will lead to many more victories for this Penguins team, and create a more balanced team in the process. We know that the offense is dynamic, and with the help of Letang and more solid performances from the goaltenders, this defense will be too.
