Penguins Playoffs History: Most Dangerous Canadiens Shooters

Under the NHL’s “new”  playoff format, the fifth-place Pittsburgh Penguins will battle the twelfth-place Montreal Canadiens. Here is a look back at the Canadiens most dangerous scorers vs. the Penguins in the playoffs.

Once the NHL announced their initial plans for a return to hockey, Pittsburgh Penguins social media blew up with the assertion that the Penguins would not be able to get past Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens.

While the Penguins odds in a series vs. the Canadiens, look pretty good right now, we have to keep history in mind, as Pittsburgh is 0-2 (1998 and 2010) in series vs. Montreal.

Here is a look back at the Canadiens highest scorers vs. the Penguins in the playoffs.

Scott Gomez

Gomez made appearances in 10 games from 2010-12.vs. Penguins in the regular season, scoring two goals and five points. Gomez appeared in all seven games of the 2010 series and scored seven points (all assists).

Gomez had multi-point games in Game’s 1 and 2 of the series and earned an assist on Cammalleri’s game-winning goal in Game 2.

Mike Cammalleri

Cammalleri appeared in eight regular-season games for the Canadiens against the Penguins from 2010-12 and scored three goals and five points.

In the postseason, Cammalleri scored seven goals and eight points in seven games played during the 2010 series.

Callalleri was one of the main catalysts for Montreal’s success in the series and earned three, two-point games, and was credited with the game-winning goals in Game 2 and in the decisive Game 7.

Vincent Damphousse

Damphousse was the highest-paid player in Canadiens history at the time of 1998 series and scored two goals and four assists in six GP.

In the regular-season Damphousee made appearances 32 games for the Canadiens vs. the Penguins and scored 10 goals and 27 points.

Damphousse compiled three multi-point games and earned an assist on Shayne Corsons GWG in Game 3 of the series.

Brian Gionta

Gionta played in 14 regular-season games while a member of Montreal vs. Pittsburgh and scored five goals and 10 points.

In the playoffs, Gionta scored five goals and eight points in the seven-game series in 2010.

Gionta’s most productive game in the series occurred in Montreal’s 5-2 win in Game 7. Gionta scored two powerplay goals first and final

Mark Recchi

Recchi made 25 regular-season appearances with the Canadiens against the Penguins from 1995-99 and scored eight goals and 22 points.

Recchi scored three goals and eight points in the six-game series and his most productive games were where he delivered the death blows (GWG) in Game’s 5 and 6.
