The hockey community is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of former Penguins forward Adam Johnson.

During a game at Utilita Arena in Sheffield, England, Johnson sustained a significant injury to his neck following a collision on the ice. Despite his attempt to reach the bench, concerned teammates and officials intervened, promptly calling for medical assistance. Out of respect and concern, the game was postponed.

This morning, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced the heartbreaking news that Adam Johnson, aged 29, has tragically passed away due to his injury.

Remembering Adam Johnson

Adam Johnson, from Hibbing, Minnesota, moved up in the hockey world, from playing junior hockey to joining the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In 2017, Adam’s outstanding performance at the Penguins’ training camp caught their attention. Recognizing his talent, they offered him a two-year entry-level contract. During his time with the Penguins, Adam took to the ice in 13 NHL games from 2018 to 2019. On Oct. 12, 2019, he netted his first goal for the Pens against the Minnesota Wild — a moment that must have been particularly meaningful given his Minnesota roots.

After leaving the Penguins, Adam Johnson played for several teams across Europe and North America from 2020 to 2023, including stints with Malmö Redhawks, Ontario Reign, Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and Augsburger Panther. This year, Johnson embarked on a new chapter, joining the Nottingham Panthers in the UK for the 2023-24 season.

This sad event shows the dangers of sports and reminds us that players are real people with families and dreams. Sometimes, as fans, we get so into the game that we forget about the person playing. Today, we think about how life can be short and how brave players are.

I’m thinking of Adam Johnson’s family, friends, and teammates. They’re in my thoughts and prayers.
