As we celebrate Thanksgiving this year, it’s the perfect time to highlight five Pittsburgh Penguins players who’ve significantly shaped our 2023 season.

Each member of this elite group isn’t just wearing the jersey; they’re embodying what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin. They’re not only impactful and reliable, but they also bring a spark of hope that lights up the arena every time they take to the ice.

Their individual talents, combined with an unwavering team spirit, are what make this lineup extraordinary. While my selection might stir up some friendly debates among the fans (and isn’t that part of the joy of sports?), my goal is to offer new perspectives, to shine a light on the nuances that make these players indispensable.

From critical game-turning plays to the sheer exhilaration of hard-fought victories, these players are more than just athletes; they’re the architects of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ triumphs. Their commitment, skill, and passion are the foundation upon which our team’s success is built.

Let’s dive in and give thanks to the keystones of our beloved team this season.

5. Jake Guentzel: The Assist Maker

Jake Guentzel‘s prowess on the ice this season has been nothing short of remarkable. Tied for third in goals with Reilly Smith, Guentzel’s true mastery has been evident in his role as a playmaker.

Leading the Pittsburgh Penguins with 15 assists in just 17 games, his vision and execution are key factors in the team’s offensive thrust. Guentzel’s impact resonates beyond mere statistics. He’s evolved from a goal-scoring dynamo to a more rounded, playmaking force, underscoring his versatility and growing maturity as a player.

In the constellation of Pittsburgh Penguins stars, if Sidney Crosby is the Michael Jordan of hockey, then Guentzel is undoubtedly his Scottie Pippen, especially on the first line. His knack for feeding teammates reflects a strategic shift in his gameplay, showcasing a broader understanding and adaptation to the team’s needs.

This season, Guentzel has not just scored goals; he’s been instrumental in crafting them, proving his indispensable role in the Penguins’ lineup.

4. Erik Karlsson: The Missing Link We Needed

Erik Karlsson’s arrival to the Pittsburgh Penguins has been a game-changer, reminiscent of the seismic shift we witnessed when Phil Kessel joined the roster on July 1st, 2015.

Karlsson’s early performance signals a stellar season ahead; with 17 games under his belt, he’s already on track for an astounding 87 points. But his value transcends mere numbers. Karlsson embodies the essence of what Penguins fans yearn for in a player: dynamic, impactful, and consistently surprising.

He may not mirror the defensive prowess of Marcus Pettersson, but that’s not his role. Karlsson is a maestro of offense, his assists this season have been jaw-dropping exhibitions of skill and creativity. Currently second in team assists with 12, his influence is undeniable.

Karlsson brings a rare blend of offensive acumen and agility to the defenseman position, a combination that has been pivotal in fortifying the Penguins as serious playoff contenders. However, as much as Karlsson strengthens the team’s offensive front, the Penguins must address their inconsistencies to fully capitalize on his talents.

Karlsson’s inclusion in our gratitude list isn’t just warranted, it’s undeniable. His unique style and contribution have not only energized the team but also redefined what’s possible from the blue line.

3. Bryan Rust: Not Enough Credit for Rusty!

Bryan Rust might not dominate the headlines or be the main topic among fans on social media, but his performance this season for the Pittsburgh Penguins deserves a spotlight. Tucked away from the limelight, Rust has been a force to reckon with, earning him a solid third place on our gratitude list.

While some might have anticipated Kris Letang in this spot (stay tuned for more on him), Rust’s contributions are too significant to overlook. Tied for second on the team with 9 goals alongside Evgeni Malkin and contributing an impressive 7 assists, Rust has accumulated 16 points thus far.

But it’s not just the statistics that make Rust invaluable. It’s the synergy he creates when paired with Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby. This trio has become one of the most exhilarating lines to watch in the NHL. Rust brings a unique blend of speed, skill, and tenacity that perfectly complements Crosby’s scoring prowess and Guentzel’s playmaking.

His presence on the line is more than just an addition; it’s a catalyst that elevates the entire unit’s performance. Without Rust, the dynamic and the output of this line could be markedly different. His role in the Penguins’ successes this season is undeniable, and it’s high time we give Bryan Rust the recognition he richly deserves.

2. Evgeni Malkin: Could Have Been Number One!

Rewind to October, and Evgeni Malkin would have topped this list without a doubt. His start to the season was nothing short of spectacular, reinforcing why he’s been a cornerstone for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

While November may have seen a slight dip in the explosive impact we’re used to from Malkin and his 2nd line, his position at number two is more than justified today. The chatter around the league about Malkin’s age and supposed decline? In my view, it’s just noise.

Malkin continues to defy expectations. As we’ve noted, he’s tied for second in goals on the team with 9 alongside Bryan Rust, complemented by 9 assists and a total of 16 points.

The real story here is not just about numbers; it’s about Malkin’s adaptability and leadership on the ice. His pairing with Reilly Smith has been nothing short of elite, demonstrating a chemistry that’s vital for the Penguins’ offensive strategy. Sure, if Rickard Rakell was firing on all cylinders, Malkin’s stats might be even more impressive.

But even without that, Malkin’s influence is undeniable. He’s the spark that keeps this line dynamic and formidable. The day Rakell finds his rhythm, expect this line to reach new heights of excitement and effectiveness. Despite the conversations about his age, Malkin is a testament to the adage that form is temporary, but class is permanent.

He’s not just playing; he’s making a difference. And for a player of his caliber, that’s precisely what we expect.

1. Sidney Crosby: The Captain of the Pens Ship

Let’s face it – when compiling a list of Penguins players we’re thankful for, there’s one name that unquestionably tops it.

Sidney Crosby, the undisputed leader and the heart of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is the player we all should be immensely grateful for this Thanksgiving. The thought of the Penguins without Crosby might loom on the horizon, but for now, we’re still basking in the era of his remarkable leadership.

As we approach Thanksgiving eve with the New York Rangers next up, Crosby’s stats speak for themselves: leading the team with 12 goals and a total of 22 points. His performance in November has been nothing short of spectacular, highlighted by a hat trick and the highest goal tally over the past two months.

Sidney Crosby’s influence, however, extends far beyond his impressive scoring and assist records. His standing as second in the plus/minus category, a significant achievement for a forward, is a testament to his all-encompassing impact on the game. With a plus/minus of 11, Crosby demonstrates his essential role in both offensive drives and defensive stands.

His presence on the ice isn’t just about individual brilliance; it’s about elevating the entire team, and maintaining a balance that consistently tips in the Penguins’ favor. As the captain, Crosby’s contributions go beyond stats; his leadership, his resilience, and his ability to inspire are what truly define the Penguins.

As we celebrate this Thanksgiving, Sidney Crosby is more than just a player to be thankful for; he’s a legend who continues to steer this team with unparalleled skill and grace.
