The Penguins needed a win so bad coming into Sunday's second half of a back-to-back with the New York Islanders. They got the job done with a 3-2 victory as Crosby broke Mario Lemieux's Penguins all-time assists record and the powerplay went 2-2 in front of the home crowd. The Penguins did what they usually do as they led 3-0 but held on for dear life late in the third as they gave up 2 late ones. But all that matters is they secured the victory and are still in the playoff race.
Crosby was robbed Saturday but made it count on Sunday
In Saturday's matchup on Long Island, it seemed that Crosby broke Lemieux's record on Bunting's powerplay goal. It was put on the board for a good bit in the first period, but then as the first period wound down, it was taken off the board.
But Crosby made it count on Sunday and the NHL could not take this one away as he found Bunting standing in front of the net as Bunting potted it for another powerplay goal in back-to-back nights.
The crowd gave Crosby a standing ovation as he became the Penguins all-time assists leader with 1,034 and stands alone in Penguins history.
If the Penguins want to make the playoffs, the powerplay needs to keep clicking
The Penguins for years now have struggled to be really consistent on the powerplay. It is one of the main reasons why they have missed the playoffs the last two seasons.
They have left points off the board standings wise because the powerplay was not converting at a consistent rate. But that seems to have changed this season as they are converting at a 25.9% rate which is good for 5th in the league.
If they want to stay in the race and have any shot at making the playoffs this year, they are going to have to keep scoring on the powerplay and taking advantage when they get the chance.
