It hasn't even been a full calendar year since the Pittsburgh Penguins fleeced the Edmonton Oilers in the Tristan Jarry trade. He was dealt to the Canadian team on December 12 of last season, and many thought he could rebound on a new team.
Unfortunately for Jarry and the Oilers, they sputtered after he joined the club, and now the Oilers and Jarry are in an uncomfortable spot, much like he was with the Penguins after signing his long-term contract extension.
The new season always brings newfound hope, but in Jarry's case, all of that hope he thought he would find came crashing down in their first contest. Somehow the Oilers were able to balance out the former Penguins goalie's poor performance and force overtime in their first game of the long campaign. That was an achievement of its own as Tristan Jarry continued to show ugly play.
Edmonton is saddled with Jarry's massive cap hit for another season after this one, which could be debilitating for a team trying to win a Stanley Cup. Unless they overpay for a team to take him on as a cap dump in a trade, the Oilers will have no other choice but to live with him on their team. It was only one game, but this has been a consistent trend of bad performances for the former Penguins player.
Ex-Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry continues to struggle after his career-defining trade
After signing a massive extension with the Penguins back in 2023, many thought Tristan Jarry could return to All-Star form. That did not happen, in fact, the opposite did. The netminder got his money and fell off to the wayside in a hurry. He struggled with injury, inconsistent play, and losing the starting net on occasion. That contract was the biggest red flag of the Kyle Dubas era for a while.
That all changed when the Penguins somehow found a trade partner in Edmonton.
They wanted a known starter in the NHL, and although Jarry has plenty of experience, it was clear that he was not a top tier player at his position. Only a year prior to the deal he was sent on waivers when any team could've collected him for free. Instead, the Penguins received two NHL players and a second round pick in return for him.
It appeared to be a fleece of a deal for Pittsburgh at the time, and that train of thought is only getting stronger. After Tristan Jarry's season opener debacle for the Oilers, things will only get more tense in that city. They love their hockey and they appear to be on a ticking clock to win a Stanley Cup for Connor McDavid. Any sort of failure to accomplish that goal could risk their icon leaving town.
Getting out from Jarry's contract continues to age like fine wine for the Penguins. Perhaps Kyle Dubas was lucky to deal away the embattled goalie, but it helped solve his biggest mistake as general manager to date. Edmonton is in a world of hurt right now because of their trade miscalculation. Their season opener shows that having Jarry could make this mess worse before it gets better.
