As the Penguins marched into TD Garden to take on the Boston Bruins, it felt like more of the same old same old. They allowed the first goal relatively early, and it felt like it was going to be one of those games that they are usually used to. But that was not the case this time as Jarry settled in after giving up an early goal and the Penguins got a clutch goal from newcomer Philip Tomasino. Tomasino's goal stood as the winner as the Penguins defeated the Boston Bruins 2-1 and returned home to PPG Paints Arena with two points in their pocket.
Tomasino is the winger that Malkin needed all along
Evgeni Malkin had been needing a competent winger that is young and fast and can skate and can really play on the offensive side of the puck for who knows how long.
Say hello to Philip Tomasino, general manager Kyle Dubas's new acqusition. Tomasino was put on Malkin's line in Wednesday's victory over the Canucks and again in Friday's victory over the Bruins and Tomasino is there to stay.
He helps complement Malkin so well and does a lot of the little things right. As can be seen on the winning goal, Tomasino and Malkin were skating in circles and playing catch with the puck. Until Malkin fed Tomasino a nice little pass and Tomasino found space and put it behind Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman for a 2-1 lead.
This was quite the goal as it gave the Penguins a rare lead and it helped Tomasino feel good about his game after being healthy scratched a ton when he played for the Nashville Predators.
Momentum needs to continue in Saturday's tilt against Calgary Flames
The Penguins are finishing up a back-to-back on Saturday as the Calgary Flames come to town. The Penguins are on a 2-game winning streak and need to keep that momentum come Saturday's game.
The Penguins have defeated 2 straight teams that made last year's playoffs and the Flames are looking good to start this year so far.
Look for Alex Nedeljkovic to get the start as Jarry played the Bruins and faced over 30 shots on goal in the victory.
