As it has been the story of the off-season continues once again as Kyle Dubas swung for the fences and struck out looking after Jason Robertson extended with Dallas on a one year deal at a $12,000,000 cap hit/AAV and will become a UFA at the end of his contract. He will be eligible January 1, 2027 to sign a long term extension with Dallas.
Opinion: Kyle Dubas for some reason has an obsession with draft picks that won't play for multiple years and that is the reason why a trade did not materialize, hanging onto draft picks won't help in the current as he says they "want to contend". Dallas wanted draft picks and Dubas probably said no to parting with high end picks.
Names like Elias Pettersson and Shane Wright are among players to see if the Penguins swerve and decide to actually want to improve the roster that has too many wholes in the defense and too many forwards and need to jettison the dead weight.
What will come of Jason Robertson will probably see him sign a seven year extension on January 1, 2027 or later mid season, as Dallas will have more than enough money to allow him to cash in on his massive payday. If for some reason this sweepstakes comes around town again next year, Pittsburgh may try to swoop in again. The likeliness of him being available again will be very slim.
It is very curious to see the fact that Dallas wasn't able to get him locked up long term now, the vision for what they will do to get to that point makes sense and is clear as to how they have it all planned out and pitched it to Jason Robertson and his agent during final talks.
His arbitration date was scheduled for July 25. Jason's agent said his preference was to stay in Dallas and he got exactly what he was looking for.
