The Penguins came into this matchup with the Edmonton Oilers on Star Wars Night, looking for their first win over the Oilers since 2019. They lost their last 7 games against them and got outscored 38-9 in that span. But not this time, as the Penguins were able to put together a 4 goal first period and actually hold on to a 2-goal lead and shake off awful officiating to pick up 2 points.
First Period
The Penguins scored the first goal in this one and got the first period started off with a bang as Rickard Rakell stayed hot and put a rebound in the net behind Stuart Skinner for a 1-0 Penguins lead.
But the Penguins were not finished yet as another part of the top line for the Penguins got on the board as Bryan Rust's wrister beat Stuart Skinner and the Penguins were up 2-0 early in the first.
But wait there's more. The O'Connor-Hayes-Puljujarvi line was absolutely cooking in the offensive zone as Hayes took a sweet pass from O'Connor and buried it for a 3-0 Penguins lead.
Draisaitl found a rebound and put it home minutes later after Alex Nedeljkovic made a spectacular windmill save on Zach Hyman and it was 3-1 Penguins.
But the Penguins had one more goal in them in the first as O'Connor took a great pass from Rust and buried it top shelf and the Penguins went into the second period up 4-1 and feeling great.
Second Period
The Penguins had their first and only powerplay of the game early in the second period and made it count. As Crosby took a slick pass from Michael Bunting and beat Stuart Skinner easily and it was 5-1 Penguins.
Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins found the back of the net for the Oilers in the second, as Nugent-Hopkins goal was on the powerplay from a questionable penalty call on Michael Bunting.
The Penguins fans were not happy after this one as they were already upset earlier in the game when Bryan Rust got an interference call on Connor McDavid when McDavid looked at Rust and skated into him and drew a call even though McDavid should've been called for embeliishment.
Either way the Penguins went into the third up 5-3 and looking to protect a scary 5-3 lead.
Third Period
This Period was very uneventful as the Penguins played very good defense and got some very good goaltending from Nedeljkovic and held on to their 2-goal lead and took this one 5-3 and picked up a huge 2 points in the Eastern Conference standings.
