Kyle Dubas remains an active general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and he even openly stated players they are on the search for. They would like to target players both in free agency and on the trade market who are in the young to mid 20s who have a chance to become their next era of star players. One name has just popped up who fits that mold.

Simon Edvinsson might be the perfect option for them moving forward.

According to Elliotte Friedman's latest reporting, Edvinsson, who has been in a bitter contract dispute, would rather get traded than sticking with the Detroit Red Wings. It's an odd time for Detroit as the team has an interim general manager and another star of theirs, Dylan Larkin, also looking to be dealt sometime in the near future. Edvinsson is a clear trade target for Pittsburgh starting now.

The Penguins have the draft picks, prospects, and NHL players to make a potential Simon Edvinsson trade work for both sides. It would cost a chunk of assets to acquire him, plus they would need to sign him to a new contract once they get him on their team. There would be a lot of moving parts, but this is a trade that is a clear option for the team. Edvinsson is the type of player they are starving for.

Pittsburgh Penguins mock trade for Simon Edvinsson creates a mind blowing deal

In this mock trade, the Penguins land Simon Edvinsson on a massive contract extension, plus a fifth-round pick in return for an NHL defenseman, two top tier prospects in their system and a conditional second round pick. The condition on the second-round pick in this case will allow that to become the highest second round pick of Pittsburgh's if they reach the playoffs, if not then it becomes the latest of the two second round choices they have in 2027.

Another interesting wrinkle to note in this mock trade is Will Horcoff going to Detroit. His father Shawn is the interim general manager of the Red Wings, something that could affect his decision if the Red Wings pull the trigger on a Edvinsson deal. On top of that, Pittsburgh sends out Rutger McGroarty who is struggling to find standing in the organization and could be expendable.

This is a type of trade that Kyle Dubas should be going all-in for. There won't be many chances for Pittsburgh to land a young defender of Edvinsson's ilk moving forward, especially at this point of the season. He's only 23 years old, about to head into the prime of his career, and would be under contract control at a fair price with a promising future cap environment foreseen across the league.

Bringing in Simon Edvinsson would help cement a top pairing left-handed defenseman for the club for the long-term future.

This is a player Dubas has said he has been on the hunt for and willing to investigate. This mock trade shows the Penguins will have to pay a heavy price for Edvinsson, but it'll be worth it. Landing a young defender to help their club now and in the future is a no brainer.
