There have been plenty of trade rumours surrounding Jason Robertson since the NHL Draft back in June. Weeks have passed since the Pittsburgh Penguins were highly interested in the star winger for the Dallas Stars. A trade for the skilled player remains unlikely, but not impossible. The Penguins have been trying to land a big fish but have failed to accomplish that task to date.
General manager Kyle Dubas is someone who isn't afraid to make some deals when necessary. Looking at the Penguins roster as it currently sits and it screams as one who needs to add more upgrades to help them compete this season. Any failure to make some additional trades before the regular season begins could hinder their efforts of trying to make the playoffs once again.
Jason Robertson is their top target right now, and he might be one of their final chances of making a splash this off-season.
Dubas and the rest of the interested teams around the NHL know the star player has an arbitration hearing set for July 25, and that might be a date to circle on the calendar. That could leave on a handful of days to land the trade option before he signs a contract.
Pittsburgh Penguins trade rumors surrounding Jason Robertson might have a deadline
One way or another, the Stars must figure out what they are doing with Jason Robertson on July 25. The big time player will command big money and Dallas cannot afford his asking price. That is why he is available for trade in the first place. The Penguins have some assets to move in a massive deal for the star player, but the Stars would prefer to keep Robertson around for as long as possible.
This is a pivotal time leading up to the arbitration hearing as Dallas must decide which route they will take.
Perhaps the team and winger can agree to a one-year extension, which would make him an unrestricted free agent in 2027. That could be another way the star player could finally land in Pittsburgh. Either they go with a short-term solution, or a trade needs to transpire.
Going after Robertson on the trade market would be an aggressive move by Kyle Dubas. His roster is frantically flawed, but it's not every day that a player with star power and a knack for sinking pucks into the back of the net becomes available. This is the time for Dubas to strike a sign and trade with the Stars if they truly are willing to make a move and send Jason Robertson out of town.
Expect the Robertson saga to come to an end in the coming week with his arbitration date being the signal in the sky. He will either re-sign and Dallas must work cap logistics in a hurry, or his current employer must locate a trade destination. If the Penguins find out that Robertson is a true trade option, Kyle Dubas and his staff will do their best to bring him to Pittsburgh.
