They have yet to announce when training camp will start, but the Pittsburgh Penguins will be busy. We are roughly a month out from the summer ending for the players as they will get set for a competitive chunk of pracitces to prepare them for the season ahead. One elephant in the room that's in need of addressing is the potential contract extension for their cornerstone, Sidney Crosby.
Last time his contract was in need of a new deal, many wondered if Crosby would re-sign with the Penguins. He eventually did, and after a trip to the playoffs last season, it seems like he will easily decide to return on a new deal. According to Josh Yohe of the Athletic, a contract extension between Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins could be happening much sooner than expected.
"When a similar contract situation unfolded for Crosby two years ago, he signed a two-year deal on Sept. 16, 2024, immediately before training camp began." Yohe continued writing, "We could be looking at a similar timeline this time."
With the last time frame in mind for when Crosby re-signed with the Penguins, it's safe to wonder if that trend will continue. The Captain will not want to be any sort of distratction to his team going into a training camp with fresh faces in the fold. He wants to remain in Pittsburgh, and it seems like that feeling is mutual. Don't be shocked if there is a Crosby extension ironed out within the month.
Pittsburgh Penguins contract extension with Sidney Crosby could have timeframe in place
It appears that it is a matter of when, not if Sidney Crosby re-signs with the Pittsburgh Penguins. If he had any sort of desire to leave town to chase more Stanley Cup championships elsewhere, he would've left the last time he was in need of an extension. Now that the club is coming off a year where they overachieved, it would make little sense for the long-time center to leave the team.
Some might wonder why Crosby wasn't signed to an extension once he became eligible on July 1, well that could be on his end.
The summer months are important for players to take a step away from the game they love, recuperate, and return to form when the time is right. As the star player ages, he could require more time to prepare his mind and body for the upcoming season before he talks business.
Yohe reported, "When I recently spoke with Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson, he said he hadn’t discussed the contract with Crosby yet, indicating he was letting his most famous client enjoy his summer before getting back to business."
At the end of the day, this is no time to panic for anyone who is worried about Sidney Crosby ever leaving Pittsburgh. He remains loyal to the Penguins organization, and all signs point to him signing an extension with them before training camp starts. If that becomes true, then expect the news to break sometime in the middle of September. That's in about a month.
Crosby took a hometown discount the last time he signed an extension, and it could happen again. His biggest concern is helping the Penguins become as cap flexible as possible to ice a team who can compete for championships. Even if Sid doesn't sign an extension before the campaign starts, don't worry about him leaving town as a new contract would be ironed out after the year ahead.
