The Penguins finally were coming home to PPG Paints Arena Saturday night after enduring a long 3-4 road trip which saw it capped off with an OT winner from Sidney Crosby in Utah. And there seemed to be no signs of rust coming home, as the Penguins earned their first shutout of the season as Alex Nedeljkovic stopped all 25 shots he faced in the victory.
Also in the victory, Phillip Tomasino netted the game winner and Crosby scored for the fourth straight game and Bryan Rust hit an empty netter to cap this one off for extra measure.
First Period
This period was very uneventful for the most part as the Penguins had 2 powerplays and came up empty on both. But they did score the only goal of the period as Tomasino took a pretty pass from Letang and ripped it past Saros for a 1-0 lead.
Tomasino's goal came right after Jonathan Marchassault's penalty had just expired and the Penguins took a 1-0 lead into the second period.
Second Period
This period saw 21 combined shots on goal from both teams, with the Penguins having 14 of them, and Crosby scoring the only goal of the period.
As mentioned earlier, this marked 4 straight games for Crosby with a goal and it was his 17th of the season as he took a pretty backdoor feed from Rakell and buried it.
The Penguins took a 2-0 lead and a 23-16 shots advantage into the final period at the paint can.
Third Period
One last period that saw 22 combined shots but was mainly uneventful. As Bryan Rust's empty net goal was the only goal of the period and helped secure the victory for the home team.
That was all she wrote from PPG Paints Arena as the Penguins picked up their second straight victory and they host the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night in a Metropolitan division matchup.
