It's that time of year where Kyle Dubas has to start cooking up some magic to put the Penguins in the best scenario to continue to win. He did exactly that as he signed two key players to contract extensions.
The first signing of the duo is Ilya Solovyov has been inked to a one year extension at an AAV of $850,000 and on a one way contract. Ilya finished the season with the Penguins hopping into third pairing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Dubas claimed Solovyov off waivers from Colorado this season and was moving in and out of the lineup. He is a good depth defenseman who is serviceable for the Penguins heading into next season.
The second signing was Connor Dewar earning himself a two year extension with the Penguins after re-iterating the desire to return to the team during locker-room clean-outs. Dewar is signed to an AAV of $2,250,000 through his two year deal and is coming off a career year in every category. He notched 14G, 16A, 30P in 78GP. Dewar was easily one of the Penguins most noticeable forwards all playoffs in the first round and is a perfect fit on that fourth line.
Tidy work by Kyle Dubas to sign Dewar to a low AAV and solid term that matches a small bridge like deal. Still allows Pittsburgh to have a lot of cap space.
With the two signing's now done, it still leaves the Penguins with $42,700,000 in cap space for the off-season with some key names that are still pending like Evgeni Malkin, (UFA) Egor Chinakhov (RFA) and Arturs Silovs (RFA) to use that money and also in Free Agency and Trades.
Dubas has gotten to work early on filling out the Penguins bottom six and keeping most of that powerful fourth line in-tact. He has a tall task ahead of him in terms of getting this team constructed and ready for next season through trades and signing's. The team already has gotten so much younger and fans are calling for the Geno extension. Time will tell.
