Pens flown away by Capitals in 4-1 loss on second end of back-to-back

The Penguins had an opportunity to win both games of their back-to-back this weekend but came up short in a 4-1 loss to a good Capitals team.

The Penguins came into Saturday night's game at the Capitals on a high after a win Friday night at the Sabres, and were looking to add on to that victory. But that was not the case as the Penguins yet again started slow and Joel Blomqvist got the loss in his first start back in the NHL since November. The Penguins dropped this one 4-1 and embark on their California road trip this upcoming week.

First Period

Although the shot totals in the first did not look lopsided, the Capitals were all over the Penguins in this first period. The Capitals proved that point as defenseman Jakob Chychrun scored the first goal of the game from the point as it deflected off Anthony Beauvillier's stick and in the net.

The Capitals took a 1-0 lead and a 9-8 shots advantage into the second period.

Second Period

The Penguins slowness continued into the second period as the Capitals added on to their lead. Marcus Pettersson had an ugly turnover behind his own net, and Aliaksei Protas was all alone in front of the net and capitalized off the turnover.

The Capitals took a 2-0 lead and a 20-14 shots advantage into the third period.

Third Period

The Penguins actually had some pushback in the third period and finally got on the scoreboard late in the third. Rust went in on a 2-on-1 with Rakell and toe dragged around the Capitals defense and buried it and it was 2-1 Capitals.

But the Penguins could not find that equalizer as the Capitals scored an insurance powerplay goal and then an empty net goal and the score was way more lopsided than the game actually was.

That was all she wrote from Capital One Arena on Saturday night as the Capitals took this one 4-1 over their division rivals.
