The Penguins entered Friday night on a back-to-back against the Sabres and the Capitals needing points after losing their last few games. They did more than just defeat the Sabres 5-2; they got a goalie goal from Alex Nedeljkovic and Nedeljkovic made history. He is the first goaltender in NHL history to score a goal and have an assist in the same game.
What an accomplishment for the goaltender as the Penguins picked up a big 2 points on the first end of the back-to-back.
First Period
The first 20 minutes of this game was pretty uneventful aside from the one goal that was scored late in the first period.
Evgeni Malkin was called for a very questionable high-sticking penalty for 4 minutes as it looked like a follow-through, but alas the Penguins were shorthanded. And Buffalo's Owen Power converted on the second end of the powerplay for a 1-0 Sabres lead.
The Sabres took a 1-0 lead and a 10-7 shots advantage into the second period.
Second Period
This period is where the ball really got rolling for the visitors. The Penguins tallied 3 times in the period, twice on the powerplay, and it was fun hockey.
Buffalo's Rasmus Dahlin took a high-sticking penalty at :31 of the second period and Rickard Rakell made him pay and it was tied at 1 a piece.
The Penguins were not done there as 27 seconds later, Anthony Beauvillier took a sweet pass from Cody Glass, went in on a mini breakaway and buried it for a 2-1 Penguins lead.
But wait there's one more. Buffalo's Henri Jokiharju took a tripping penalty in the middle of the second period and as the penalty was winding down, Cody Glass made him pay. He took a sweet pass behind the goal from Phillip Tomasino and it was 3-1 good guys.
The Penguins took a 3-1 lead and the Sabres took a 23-16 shots advantage into the third period.
Third Period
The powerplay was really on fire in this one as Bryan Rust converted for the Penguins third powerplay goal of the game early in the third period. It was 4-1 Penguins and it seemed all over from there.
Buffalo's Zach Benson got one back at 14:46 with their goalie on the bench and it was 4-2.
And with the goalie on the bench again, the puck came around the boards and goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic decided to take his shot and hit the bullseye to make it 5-2. He rushed to the bench and jumped up and all of his teammates greeted him and congratulated him.
What a moment for the Penguins and their goaltender, as that was all she wrote on this victory from Buffalo as the Penguins travel to the nation's capital to take on the Capitals on Saturday night.
