The Pittsburgh Penguins recently defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 behind a masterful defensive performance where they only allowed 12 shots on goal. But defeating the Red Wings on Saturday, put them in a bracket of 10 current NHL teams that have a positive goal differential.

The Penguins now sit at a +3 in goal differential for the year and are one of ten teams out of 32 in the entire league, to be positive in that aspect. It is a unique stat to be a part of as when the Penguins went on that big losing streak, it seemed like they dipped way down in the negatives of that category.

But the fact now that they have won 4 straight games and have been defeating teams by a good goal margin, says a lot about how head coach Dan Muse has his team playing as of late. He has them prepared and ready to go and playing shutdown defense and supporting their teammates with the puck and paying attention to details.

In the win over the Red Wings, you could tell that the Penguins were able to keep Detroit to the outside and shut down almost any chance that they had to score. The Red Wings did not have many chances to score in the game as that meant the Penguins were playing that good.

It also speaks volumes that the Penguins were able to have a +4 goal differential in their recent win over the Hurricanes and were a +4 over the Red Wings in two wins against them in three days. The Penguins for years now have had an issue where they have gotten a ton of scoring chances but have not been able to finish them for goals.

As of late, it seems like the Penguins have solved that issue and are scoring goals when they should. Being 1 of 10 teams to have a positive goal differential so far this year, means the Penguins are playing good hockey and are finding the back of the net more which is always a good thing.
