After announcing the roster of prospects who will be taking part in the upcoming tournament, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a lot to monitor. They have some skaters who could challenge for a spot in the NHL lineup, while others could alter how they are viewed in the organization. With a strong prospect tournament outing, these up-and-coming Penguins could make a big difference.
There were some notable absent headlining names who won't be suiting up for the prospect tournament, which came as a surprise in some instances.

Pittsburgh Penguins who could skyrocket their roster status with strong prospect tournament
Liam Ruck-2026 1st Round Pick
He was just selected as the first rounder of the Penguins this past summer, but don't anticipate him having a quick rise like Ben Kidel did. Liam Ruck is an interesting prospect with a fantastic story with his brother, fellow Penguins prospect Markus, together in the same organization. It wouldn't be surprising to see him and his brother sit on the same line during the upcoming tournament.
Harrison Brunicke-2024 2nd Round Pick
This event seems somewhat beneath Harrison Brunicke when you look at where he is projected to be at.
If the Pittsburgh Penguins hadn't fully loaded the right side of their defensive pairings, Brunicke would probably be a shoo-in to make the big clubs roster. He still has a shot at making the big leagues this year, but he must dominate this event and carry that over into a sensational preseason process.
Bill Zonnon-2025 1st Round Pick
Many who were drafted by the Penguins last year were overlooked after Kindel's rise, but Bill Zonnon had a strong start to his pro career. He struggled with injuries during his time in the QMJHL in 2025, but his rise to the AHL provided a spark during the Penguins playoff run. Expect him to produce an impressive performance despite having little shot at making the roster this season.
Peyton Kettles-2025 2nd Round Pick
Another name many have forgotten about because he missed a ton of time due to a shoulder injury last year is Peyton Kettles. The young defender is someone the team could use to help boost their system. This will be a massive campaign for Kettles and his development. Since he missed almost an entire year with injury, he will have less time to turn into a solid NHL defenseman.
Markus Ruck-2026 2nd Round Pick
His brother was mentioned earlier, but all eyes will be on the Ruck twins at this prospect tournament.
They immediately became one of the Penguins best prospects in their talent pool once the team drafted them. It would be a great story to see both brothers turn into star players for the club. Liam is more of the scorer of the two, while Markus is a playmaker and isn't afraid to catch some apples.
Matvei Nikonovich- 2026 5th Round Pick
You can't have a list of prospects to watch without a goalie in the mix. The Penguins left out some of their bigger goalie prospects from this tournament, but it could be the perfect time for Matvei Nikonovich to show his talent. He might not come from the highest level of hockey, but Nikonovich posted some eye-popping numbers. He could be the next solid goalie prospect to enter the system.
