The Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins are on fire to start the AHL season, and two of their forwards who have also been on the Penguins roster more recently, are tearing it up. Danton Heinen and Ville Koivunen are just toying with opponents and making everything look easy.
In 6 games played, Heinen has 3 goals and 8 assists and in 5 games played Koivunen has 3 goals and 6 assists. Both forwards have been playing extremely well for the AHL club and do not seem like they should be playing down there as of the current moment.
AHL's leading scorers right now:
— Tony Androckitis* (@TonyAndrock) October 25, 2025
1. Danton Heinen, WBS (6GP, 3G-8A-11PTS)
2. Ville Koivunen, WBS (5GP, 3G-6A-9PTS)@InsideAHLHockey
But for now, it is quite hard to find a roster spot for either player, as there is a serious forward logjam on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster. Koivunen started the season with the Penguins in Pittsburgh but actually did not show much, so he was sent down to find his game again.
Heinen played with the Penguins in the preseason, but did not make the final roster. He did not do anything that was super overly impressive and so he was sent to Wilkes-Barre to start the year. But he looks like he is just playing miles ahead of everyone else along with Koivunen.
But like previously stated, there seems to be no room for either forward on the Penguins roster. The only way they could get back up to Pittsburgh is if general manager Kyle Dubas makes some trades or if some Penguins players happen to get hurt. So both forwards just have to wait for their opportunity to arise again.
But for Koivunen, he is definitely part of the Penguins future plans and could be back up with the Penguins within the next few weeks. The Penguins have been rumored to be taking calls on forwards Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust, so if either were to get dealt, Heinen or Koivunen could make their way back to the NHL.
But for now, they will continue to tear up the AHL and make Dubas handle some tough decisions. He already has tough decisions with the young forwards on the roster, but Heinen and Koivunen are making it even tougher.
