Winter Classic: Full List of Winners & History

The NHL's Winter Classic is quite the outdoor event that has been going on since 2008 and has been quite an event to tune-in to every season despite each matchup.

The NHL Winter Classic is approaching on Wednesday evening as the Blackhawks will take on the Blues from Wrigley Field at 5:00 p.m. EST on TNT. The event has been going on since 2008 and has quite a history from different teams to being at baseball stadiums and football stadiums.

2008 First Winter Classic: Penguins vs Sabres from Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo

The first Winter Classic was an iconic one as Sidney Crosby scored the game-winner in the shootout for the Penguins as they beat the Sabres 2-1.

2009 Winter Classic: Red Wings vs Blackhawks from Wrigley Field in Chicago

Jiri Hudler was the star of the show in this one with 2 goals and 1 assist as the Red Wings took down the Blackhawks in Chicago 6-4 in front of 40K fans.

2010 Winter Classic: Bruins vs Flyers from Fenway Park in Boston

This Winter Classic was one for the ages as everyone remembers that then Bruins forward Mark Recchi tied the game late on the powerplay and then Marco Sturm won it 1:57 into overtime and the Boston fans erupted.

2011 Winter Classic: Penguins vs Capitals from Heinz Field in Pittsburgh

This Winter Classic is the one that is remembered as David Steckel taking out Sidney Crosby with an elbow to the head and giving him a concussion. Eric Fehr was the star of this one with 2 goals and the game winner as the Capitals took this one 3-1.

2012 Winter Classic: Rangers vs Flyers from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia

This game was known as the Mike Rupp game as he had 2 goals and tied the game early third period and then Brad Richards scored the game winning goal at 5:21 of the third period as the Rangers won it 3-2.

2014 Winter Classic: Maple Leafs vs Red Wings from Michigan Stadium

The 2013 Winter Classic between these two was pushed to 2014 because of the lockout in 2013. So these two teams played in 2014 instead. The Maple Leafs beat the Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout as Tyler Bozak had the winner.

2015 Winter Classic: Capitals vs Blackhawks from Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

This Winter Classic was one to watch as it was tied 2-2 late in the game but then Troy Brouwer of the Capitals became the hero and scored the game winner with 13 seconds left and helped the Capitals win 3-2.

2016 Winter Classic: Canadiens vs Bruins from Gillette Stadium in Boston

This Winter Classic was absolutely dominated by the Canadiens as they took this one in front of the Bruins' home fans by a score of 5-1. Paul Byron's second period goal was the game winner in this one.

2017 Winter Classic: Blackhawks vs Blues from Busch Stadium in St. Louis

In this Winter Classic, the Blackhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period thanks to a goal from Michal Kempny, but Vladimir Tarasenko stole the show with 2 third period goals 1:53 apart in a 4-1 Blues victory.

2018 Winter Classic: Rangers vs Sabres from Citi Field in New York

In this Winter Classic, the Rangers picked up a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Paul Carey and Michael Grabner, but the Sabres fought back with goals from Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Ristolainen.

This game went to overtime as Rangers forward JT Miller ended it on the powerplay 2:43 into the overtime period.

2019 Winter Classic: Bruins vs Blackhawks from Notre Dame Stadium in Indiana

In this Winter Classic, it was back and forth and tied at 2 going to the third period before Bruins winger Sean Kuraly scored the game winning goal at 10:20 of the third in a 4-2 victory for the Bruins.

2020 Winter Classic: Stars vs Predators from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas

In this Winter Classic, the Predators jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Stars stormed back with 3 third period goals and the game winner coming from Alexander Radulov on the powerplay at 5:06.

2022 Winter Classic: Blues vs Wild from Target Field in Minnesota

In this Winter Classic, the Blues absolutely erupted with 5 second period goals with the winner coming from Jordan Kyrou at 17:58 of the second as the Blues won this one 6-4.

2023 Winter Classic: Penguins vs Bruins from Fenway Park in Boston

In this Winter Classic, it was very low scoring and lots of defense being played. The game was tied at 1 for quite a while when Jake DeBrusk potted his second goal of the game and the game winner at 17:36 of the third period as the Bruins took this one 2-1.

2024 Winter Classic: Golden Knights vs Kraken from T-Mobile Park in Seattle

This Winter Classic was all Kraken as they took it 3-0 in front of 47K fans and shutout the Golden Knights. Eeli Tolvanen scored the game winner in this one at 4:50 of the first period.

The Blackhawks and Blues will play in the 2025 Winter Classic on December 31, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. EST on TNT.
