All signs point to new contract for Sidney Crosby after 2024 NHL media tour
During the NHL Player Media Tour, with rumors circulated about Sidney Crosby’s potential departure from Pittsburgh, the captain swiftly put those speculations to rest.
In recent months, and particularly over the last few weeks, the hockey media has fixated on the idea that Sidney Crosby may not stay in Pittsburgh beyond the 2024-25 season.
However, during today's NHL Player Media Tour, Crosby addressed the speculation, saying:
I'm pretty optimistic it's going to get done. It's been really positive. It hasn't been a difficult process.
It hasn't been much of a secret why a deal hasn't been finalized, despite the rumors and speculation.
Crosby has been carefully considering how many more years he can continue playing at a high level. At least that's the most obvious reason, regardless of what people may fantasize in their heads.
Today, he clarified his stance by saying:
You don’t really know the trajectory of everything, how you’re going to feel mentally and physically. All you can do each is year evaluate it and go from there. When you get to this point, you understand it’s more of a reality with every year you play. You kind of check in with that, through the year, every year, evaluate it.
There are certainly many reasons for Crosby to be deliberate, and he's earned that right. While concerns are understandable, the current direction of the team is likely one of the key factors.
Unlike previous offseasons, when the Penguins sought veterans with something left in the tank or players nearing the end of their careers, this offseason has taken a much different approach.
Much of the focus has been on getting younger and building draft capital, which could lead in many directions. Trades or depth are in play here.
Crosby is still in "win-now" mode, and with this new direction—combined with the likelihood that this will be his last contract—there are several reasonable explanations for the delay.
Today's comments from the captain put things into perspective and should ease everyone's worries. From here, it's simply a matter of patience.
Unless something drastic changes, Crosby will remain a Pittsburgh Penguin for life.
