Good morning, Pittsburgh Penguins fans. It's Monday, August 26th, 2024, and this is your morning edition of Pens Morning Brew.

Today’s edition will be brief, focusing on a topic that’s always close to Penguins fans' hearts: Pittsburgh Penguins captain and future Hall of Famer Sidney Crosby.

This month, Crosby has appeared on multiple lists, including the NHL’s top centers list for the 2024-25 season and the NHL’s top fantasy centers for the upcoming season.

While Crosby has yet to extend his stay in Pittsburgh, today's discussion isn't about his contract. Instead, it's a reaction to B/R's recent ranking of the "10 Best Captains in the NHL," compiled by Joe Yerdon.

Sidney Crosby ranked #1 on B/R's 10 Best Captains in the NHL

Unsurprisingly, the player known as "The Captain" is B/R's top-ranked captain in the NHL.

Joe Yerdon had this to say about his selection of Sidney Crosby:

It's not only because, out of everyone we ranked, he's won the most Stanley Cups (three in four appearances), but it's also because he's been captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins since he was 20 years old and has helped them weather two distinct eras in which they've won the Stanley Cup.

Yerdon continued by noting that Crosby’s leadership has prompted many to wonder if Connor McDavid might become the next top captain in the NHL — a question worth considering.

McDavid has certainly made a name for himself in the league, significantly reshaping the Edmonton Oilers. Yerdon, by the way, ranks McDavid as the second-best captain.

Sidney Crosby: Unquestioned leader of the NHL’s elite captains

Sidney Crosby has long been the gold standard for NHL captains. Anyone who disagrees might as well argue with a wall.

Since taking on the captaincy of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007, Crosby has consistently proven why he’s the league’s best. His leadership isn’t just about wearing the “C” on his jersey; it’s evident in his conduct on and off the ice.

Crosby’s work ethic, commitment to improvement, and ability to inspire teammates set a standard that others strive to follow. McDavid is just one example.

One of the key reasons Crosby stands out is his success: three Stanley Cup wins (2009, 2016, 2017) under his leadership.

His performance in clutch moments and his resilience after serious injuries, including multiple concussions, demonstrate his incredible determination and ability to elevate everyone around him.

It’s no surprise that B/R recognizes him as the league’s top captain; he’s earned that honor and more.
