Rumors are starting to swirl that the Pittsburgh Penguins top brass is negotiating with Sidney Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson. The franchise icon is heading into a year where his contract will be set to expire following the season. The ever-committed star doesn't seem eager to leave the Penguins anytime soon. Following their surprise playoff appearance last season, expect Crosby to re-sign.
Don't rule out that potential contract extension potentially coming to an agreement in the coming weeks. With training camp on the horizon for Pittsburgh, there is no doubt the Captain of the team will want this matter put to bed so he doesn't have to address his contract everytime he meets with the media. The team and the player are in negotiations, but that doesn't mean it will be a simple outcome.
"Pat (Brisson)'s talking to Kyle (Dubas). It’s just a little bit more difficult at my age as far as trying to project where you’re gonna be," Crosby told Mark Lazerus of The Athletic.
Crosby just turned 39 last month, and he is at an age in his career where he doesn't truly know how much longer it'll go. The fact that he has kept on his current path of consistency through his later days in his career is a true marvel. While a contract will probably get agreed upon between the Penguins and Sidney Crosby, the star player might take another short-term resolution.

Age will ultimately become the factor for Crosby and his ability to continue to play effective hockey. Father Time reaches everyone, especially in the world of sports. Sid The Kid is only human and that means he will eventually start to slow down when it comes to his production. That said, he should remain a strong top six center for the Penguins for the next couple of years at least.
"I’d like to continue playing for a number of years," Crosby admitted. "It’s just I don’t know what that number is. I guess your mind and body tell you that eventually. Right now I feel pretty good, though."
With this likely being the final season with Evgeni Malkin as the final skater to walk out of the locker room after Sidney Crosby, plenty of changes appear to be on the way. No signs point to the legendary Captain of the team ever leaving Pittsburgh, but some losing seasons could change that.
This upcoming campaign will see Crosby see Malkin head somewhere Sid will evenutally land, retirement.
It sounds like Sidney Crosby is willing to keep his career moving forward until the wheels fall off, but not overstaying his welcome. That probably means this potential contract extension between him and the Penguins could land in the two-to-three-year range.
He could always sway his agent to try and convince the club to go year-by-year with his contract, but that is unlikely for both sides to accept.
The good news is that Sidney Crosby appears eager to get the contract extension out of the way as soon as possible. Perhaps the bad news in this is that Crosby is only getting older and he is much closer to retirement than getting back the prime years of his career. The franchise icon should end his story with the team who drafted him, even if some of the icons around him aren't around for it.
