Alright, we're back with another ridiculous comparison montage. Last time it was Star Wars characters in light of Star Wars Night.
Today, it's College Football in celebration of the College Football National Championship tonight.
So, the question has been begged: Which college football team would your favorite Pittsburgh Penguin be a fan of? Note: These are all just theoretical and simply for kicks and giggles.
Some of you already get the joke.
Marcus Pettersson is the classic example of "defense first, think about offense later". The Iowa Hawkeyes haven't batted an eye to offensive production since 1958 when they won the national championship.
Have you been enjoying the defensive contributions of Marcus Pettersson (especially that goal line save against the Capitals)? You'll want to watch this video. pic.twitter.com/swTjMniNfO

I'm not saying Pettersson can't contribute offensively...but he hasn't scored a goal in a month and a half, so you tell me who's wrong.
SMU made a scene in the College Football Playoff this year in their first season in the ACC. They really weren't on anyone's radar before last season, and they kind of just showed up and succeeded without a lot of pushback.
I can see a lot of similarities in Joel Blomqvist. Perhaps he had some sparse hype around him before he made his NHL debut this season, but I think largely his contributions have been a welcome surprise.

• 29/32
• Stopped all high-danger shots
• 0.35 GSAx
• Timely saves.
• 6-3 win.
Welcome to the Burgh, Joel! pic.twitter.com/x9FFIPxyGE
Lots of similarities here. I think the young Swede would get down with the Stangs.
Vanderbilt was a vibe this year. They've never really been good, always kind of stepped on, but they showed up and beat some good teams this year.
Drew O'Connor's surge last year made forecasting him to be a 20 goal candidate a fuzzy reality. I don't think he's quite there yet, but the grit is there.
New Jersey native Drew O'Connor has developed into playing a significant role on the top line for the Penguins.

Coach Sullivan on O'Connor: "He's another one of those guys that works extremely hard at his game both on and off the ice." pic.twitter.com/TrN8wKPIUu
I've always said DOC is a really hard worker that just happens to play hockey. He hustles, he forechecks, but the skill isn't quite there.
I see the same with Vandy. The tools and the work ethic are there, it's just a matter of time when the development kicks in.
Hopefully for DOC that comes sooner than later.
Unlike my Star Wars article, I'm choosing the players that I'm featuring for this one completely at random.
Maybe Ryan Shea was more fit to be an Iowa fan than Pettersson seeing how Shea has three points (1 G, 2 A) in 51 career games.

Elite offensive defensemen
My best second option is UMass. I won't pretend like this isn't a bit of a jab. The Minutemen are not good. They sort of just exist.
But...in my defense[man], Ryan Shea is from Massachusetts, so maybe I'm not far off.
I'll be very real: I despise Penn State. That's not to say I despise Erik Karlsson, but I can draw some similarities with him and the Nittany Lions.
Yikes: Drew Allar is not a 1st round-draft pick...

That was an AWFUL interception.pic.twitter.com/9fvHm1eEYe
Thank you, Sean McDonough, that was music to my ears.
Karlsson is a three-time Norris Trophy winner, but he's been on Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks teams that simply could not win the big game. I mean, just look at the optimism from this Senators fan back in 2018.
BEST case scenario:
— goran (@senssensei) December 3, 2018
-Melnyk sells
-Downtown arena in 4 years
-Best players kept
-Great players added
-Lose game 7 of the 2024 cup final at home in triple OT to a Chris Kunitz goal
Big fan of that last line.
EK65 is perenially one of the best in the sport, just like Penn State, but the lack of playoff success harms his ledger. You can also draw some cool comparisons to the duality of Penn State's offense and defense that tend to have a mind of their own at times, for better or for worse.
Cody Glass is well-documented to be all about the fit check. He's very conscious about what he's wearing.
Fit checks, a wedding recap, and what he does in his spare time.

Get to know Cody Glass, off the ice ⬇️ https://t.co/oTss34BTsx
It's also known that Glass is a big thrifter. And which college gear is thrifted the most? Stanford.
Cody Glass doesn't actually watch Stanford football (frankly, who would?), but he's definitely got the grey hoodie with the big, red, block letters right across the chest in his closet.
Last one, and boy did the randomizer pick a good one.
Evgeni Malkin is undoubtedly the biggest North Dakota State fan you'll ever see. The Bisons are the best team in the nation that never gets any press.
All they do is win championships and fly under the radar while doing it. Geno is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and somehow he was left off the All-Time NHL Top-100 team.

Someone please give this man some recognition for his greatness! I'll swear up and down that the FCS Championship game is usually more entertaining than the FBS National Championship. Likewise, Geno is historically a must-watch.
